Whether you are bringing your baby home for the first time or chauffeuring your kids around to their activities, you want to ensure that your vehicle is going to keep them safe while traveling. Not all vehicles are created equal, which means you are going to need to do some research when it comes to safe family vehicles. According to the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration, crashes are the leading cause of death for children ages 3 to 14. Taking the time to do your homework can help you avoid a crash. In order to start your search into a safe vehicle for your family, here are some tips on what you should look for in a vehicle.

Seat Belts

One of the biggest safety components to look for in a vehicle is a seat belt. Not all seat belts are the same. A standard seat belt will help in a crash, but there are some seat belts that have additional properties to help keep your family safe. A seat belt pretensioner is always a good idea to have. This will tighten the belt should you find yourself in a crash. They can help remove any slack in the belt so you remain seated in a crash.

Reverse Backup Sensors

A backup sensor is a great safety feature to have on any vehicle. This will alert you when you get close to an object as you are backing up. Some have alarms that will sound as well as a camera that shows you what is behind the vehicle. Not only is this important when avoiding a crash, but if you have small children, you will want to have this feature installed in your vehicle to ensure the kids are not behind your vehicle when you go to backup.

Airbags

All vehicles are required to have some airbags, but there are certain vehicles that have more than others. While you expect airbags in your steering wheel and on the passenger dashboard, many cars will come with curtain and side air bags. These add additional safety should you find yourself in a car accident.

Electronic Stability Control

It is very common to look at both used and new vehicles when shopping for vehicles. Used vehicles do not have the same safety features as newer vehicles. In 2012, a law came into effect that required all vehicles to have electronic stability control. This feature helps a driver maintain control of the vehicle when it hits a slippery surface, providing more traction control. Vehicles older than 2012 are not required to have this same feature. Some of the more luxurious vehicles before 2012 will have it, so you will need to check before making the purchase.
